How are we building the Hawaiian health workforce? The Native Hawaiian Health Scholarship Program was introduced by Papa Ola Lōkahi in 1991 as an effort to support Hawaiian haumana seeking degrees in the health professions. After many successful years supporting haumana the scholarship program was reimagined in 2021 to Mauli Ola Mālamalama to broaden its scope. On this episode of Kōhi ʻUlu we talk-story with Dr. Donna-Marie Palakiko, a māmā, nurse, researcher, professor, and director of Mauli Ola Mālamalama. Donna shares her journey as a recipient of the scholarship program, her career pursuits and pathways, the transformation of the program, and how we can build a healthier lāhui. Join us for a loving conversation on the challenges and successes of providing community and ʻohana care. Special mahalo to co-artist Waileia DeFries.
